    Expression of Ets-1, Ang-2 and maspin in ovarian cancer and their role in tumor angiogenesis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Various angiogenic regulators are involved in angiogenesis cascade. Transcription factor Ets-1 plays important role in angiogenesis, remodeling of extracellular matrix, and tumor metastasis. Ets-1 target genes involved in various stages of new blood vessel formation include angiopoietin, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and the protease inhibitor maspin.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used immunohistochemistry (IHC) to detect the expression of Ets-1, angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) and maspin in ovarian tumor and analyzed the relationship between the expression of these proteins and the clinical manifestation of ovarian cancer.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Ets-1 expression was much stronger in ovarian cancer compared to benign tumors, but had no significant correlation with other pathological parameters of ovarian cancer. However, Ang-2 and maspin expression had no obvious correlation with pathological parameters of ovarian cancer. Ets-1 had a positive correlation with Ang-2 which showed their close relationship in angiogenesis. Although microvessel density (MVD) value had no significant correlation with the expression of Ets-1, Ang-2 or maspin, strong nuclear expression of maspin appeared to be correlated with high grade and MVD.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The expression of Ets-1, Ang2 and maspin showed close relationship with angiogenesis in ovarian cancer and expression of maspin appeared to be correlated with high grade and MVD. The mechanisms underlying the cross-talk of the three factors need further investigations.</p

    An Improved Apriori Algorithm for Association Rule Mining in Employability Analysis

    The wide application of emerging advanced technologies causes significant changes in the development trend of the employment market. The lack of flexible and easy-to-implement analysis methods challenges general maritime education practitioners to understand the developing trends. This research proposed the improved Apriori algorithm to explore employment preference by identifying the association rule of the employability indicators and the employment status. The candidate generation methods are optimised based on the questionnaire design to generate fewer candidates. The minimum support value is automatically generated to reduce the reliance on analysis expertise and improve accuracy. To validate the algorithm, a questionnaire for the maritime graduate is used to collect employment data to test the efficiency and capability of the improved algorithm. The computation time for different data set sizes shows that the improvement could improve the algorithm\u27s effectiveness. The algorithm also successfully identifies significant employment preference that certain employment types emphasise specific employability skills, such as responsibility and core professional skills. The results suggest that the improved A algorithm could reduce the computing burden and identify the employment preference from questionnaire data. This research provides easy-to-use and flexible analysis tools, which could reduce the computing expertise required for education practitioners

    Evolution-Operator-Based Single-Step Method for Image Processing

    This work proposes an evolution-operator-based single-time-step method for image and signal processing. The key component of the proposed method is a local spectral evolution kernel (LSEK) that analytically integrates a class of evolution partial differential equations (PDEs). From the point of view PDEs, the LSEK provides the analytical solution in a single time step, and is of spectral accuracy, free of instability constraint. From the point of image/signal processing, the LSEK gives rise to a family of lowpass filters. These filters contain controllable time delay and amplitude scaling. The new evolution operator-based method is constructed by pointwise adaptation of anisotropy to the coefficients of the LSEK. The Perona-Malik-type of anisotropic diffusion schemes is incorporated in the LSEK for image denoising. A forward-backward diffusion process is adopted to the LSEK for image deblurring or sharpening. A coupled PDE system is modified for image edge detection. The resulting image edge is utilized for image enhancement. Extensive computer experiments are carried out to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method. The major advantages of the proposed method are its single-step solution and readiness for multidimensional data analysis

    Exploiting Delay Budget Flexibility for Efficient Group Delivery in the Internet of Things

    Further accelerated by the Internet of Things (IoT) concept, various devices are being continuously introduced into diverse application scenarios. To achieve unattended updates of IoT smart object(s), there remains a challenging problem concerning how to efficiently deliver messages to specific groups of target nodes, especially considering node mobility. In this paper, the relay selection problem is investigated on the basis of directional movement with randomness (e.g., typically associated with the searching or migrating behavior of animals). Unlike numerous works tackling one-to-one communication, we focus on efficient group delivery (one-to-many). A two-level delay budget model is considered to reflect the flexibility of delay tolerance, which brings potential efficiency gains for group delivery compared with using a single budget boundary. Following the description of the system model, a combinatorial bi-objective optimization problem is formulated and solutions are proposed. Simulation results show that the greedy algorithm can achieve comparable performance to an evolutionary algorithm when the delivery satisfaction outweighs efficiency. Furthermore, we show that our proposed greedy scheme can outperform the state-of-the-art when the delivery efficiency becomes increasingly important

    Following the in vivo investigation of thiotetronate assembly in Lentzea sp. and in S. thiolactonus NRRL 15439 (Havemann et al., Chem. Commun., 2017, DOI: 10.1039/c6cc09933e), the minimal set of genes required for thiolactomycin production was determined through heterologous expression and the mechanism for polyketide assembly was established in vitro through incubation of recombinant TlmB with its substrates in the presence of either nonhydrolysable or hydrolysable chemical probes.
